EMERGENCY SHELTER

When a disaster such as a wildfire or earthquake strikes, the Bodega Bay Grange is the primary emergency shelter on the Sonoma Coast. It is an American Red Cross shelter, and official Tsunami Evacuation Site.

But because the Grange’s kitchen facility lacked certification as a commercial kitchen, cooking hot meals for evacuees was halted by the Sonoma County Health Department.

In 2019, we made a commitment to achieve County approved and permitted “Commercial Kitchen” status. And in 2026, we completed the renovations to transform our kitchen into a certified commercial kitchen, which is now capable of preparing hot meals for those seeking refuge in an emergency situation. The upgrades also enhance the safety of our kitchen, and allow food to be prepared for commercial purposes.

We’ve also completed plumbing and electrical system upgrades, and both the kitchen and restrooms are now ADA compliant. We have an automated external defibrillator for use during a medical emergency. We recently updated our generator to provide adequate power during outages, and we provide public wifi through the EQAC network and solar-powered Starlink service.

We are a member of COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), and during an emergency, we serve the community alongside our non-profit partners Waves of Compassion Foundation, and Bodega Bay CERT – Community Emergency Response Team.
